Rev. Jacques-François Dujarié Rev. Jacques-François Dujarié was a key figure in the foundation of the Congregation of Holy Cross. His heroic determination to serve the material and spiritual needs of the poor in France helped to lay the groundwork for the mission of Holy Cross throughout the world.

Ordained in secret during the height of the French Revolution, this man of God risked his own life, often traveling through the countryside in disguise, to minister to those who were suffering. If caught, he could have been imprisoned, exiled, or executed. With a firm belief in God’s providential love and his own vocation, he stated, “I am a priest in order to be a comfort to the widow, the father of the orphan, the protector of the poor, the friend of the sick.”

Project Hope 2017 recognizes the 250th anniversary of the birth of Fr. Dujarié, a true hero of the church. Our annual contest, now in its 8th year, asked our Holy Cross middle and high school students to respond to three questions based on the life of this revolutionary priest whose actions and convictions still resonate today: 1) Has there ever been a time in your life when you had to defend your faith in the face of opposition? How did that experience strengthen your resolve to stay true to your faith? 2) Why is religious freedom important to American society? 3) How do you provide comfort to those less fortunate, to the sick, and to the poor?

Nearly 700 students from 14 Holy Cross schools across the United States sent in their projects in the form of the written word, art, music, and film. We applaud all of our students for sharing their talent and creativity with us. These are this year’s winning entries. Be inspired!
