Gilbert Zapata Martinez, 33, is from Austin, Texas. He was baptized by Fr. Joel Atwood, CSC, at Delores Parish. He has resided in the Moreau House collegiate program at St. Edward’s University for the past two years, working full-time as a Senior Environmental Advisor for the Texas General Land Office while taking courses to continue his undergraduate studies. Gilbert is an active member of St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church, a Holy Cross parish, and was referred to the brothers by its pastor, Fr. Bill Wack, CSC. John Sebastian Gutierrez, 21, is from San Antonio, Texas. He is a 2011 graduate of Holy Cross of San Antonio, and graduated on May 9, 2015, from the University of the Incarnate Word with a BA in Communication Arts. Sebastian has lived with the Holy Cross community at the Charles Andersen

Residence in San Antonio for the past year while studying and working in video production and editing at Sprocket Productions. Sebastian shared that discerning a religious vocation has brought “joy to my heart – Jesus, others, and you.”

Gilbert and Sebastian will begin their postulancy next fall as part of the St. Joseph House formation program at Holy Cross College, Notre Dame, IN. This one-year pre-novitiate program forms young men for a particular commitment to religious life while providing opportunities to experience and understand the vocation of the religious brother and the religious priest. Gilbert is discerning a vocation to religious brotherhood while Sebastian will prepare for religious priesthood.

Gilbert and Sebastian have strong connections to the Holy Cross community in Texas. Their vocations were nurtured by their family, friends, faith communities, and by the Holy Cross religious with whom they formed deep and lasting relationships. As Gilbert and Sebastian move forward in their formation, let us support them with our encouragement and prayers!
